Biography
Corey is an associate attorney in the Salt Lake City office of Parsons Behle & Latimer. His practice is focused on (1) employment litigation and advising employers on state and federal employment law issues and (2) labor law, assisting employers with union recognition, elections, collective bargaining and other aspects of labor relations.
In his employment law practice, Corey helps employers manage and avoid discrimination, retaliation, harassment and other claims arising under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical and Leave Act and other major state and federal employment statutes.
Corey’s recent employment practice achievements include:
- Resolving threatened Title VII gender- and sex-based discrimination claims during pre-suit stages responding to the would-be litigant’s demand letter;
- Settling ADA, ADEA and FMLA claims before the Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division’s Adjudication Division by leveraging timeline-based arguments and comparator evidence to undermine claims of retaliation and age-based discrimination;
- Recommending revisions to a Utah-based healthcare provider’s compensation structure to ensure compliance with federal and Utah wage and hour laws;
- Advising a Utah-based employer during a multi-state reduction in force to ensure compliance with various state and federal layoff-related laws; and
- Assisting as local counsel to both enforce and defend against enforcement of restrictive employment covenants against C-Suite employees transitioning to related, competition businesses, including advice regarding local judges, case law and legislative updates informing likelihood of success of motions for injunctive relief.
Corey also advises on and litigates wage and hour, drug testing and other employment law matters. The ability to spot both procedural and substantive issues in claims leveled against employers helps Corey efficiently dispose of such claims, often in the early stages of litigation. Corey also remains current on state and federal employment law developments to accurately advise employers regarding internal policies and employee handbooks.
In his labor practice, Corey assists employers with voluntary and traditional union recognition processes. He advises employers regarding timelines and other expectations for collective bargaining; key considerations in building collective bargaining agreements that preserve employers’ rights; and how to bargain effectively and in good faith. Corey pairs knowledge of National Labor Relations Act requirements with practical experience with National Labor Relations Board enforcement to help clients achieve smooth, respectful bargaining.
Corey’s recent labor successes include:
- Advising an employer during single-employee grievance proceedings, including drafting arguments regarding Utah and national standards for for-cause termination that persuaded grievance committee towards a favorable result;
- Assisting multi-state employer in preparation of first collective bargaining agreement, counseling regarding dozens of first-time issues and proposals and guiding negotiations towards established industry benchmarks in order to reduce ambiguity and expedite proceedings; and
- Defending national employer in National Labor Relations Board proceedings based on alleged employer retaliation, representing employer and key employees during National Labor Relations Board investigative interviews and drafting key position statements that successfully narrowed complainant’s claims.
Individuals and clients who work with Corey appreciate his responsiveness and ability to anticipate needs and issues before they develop. Corey recognizes that prompt communication leads to prompt (and cost-efficient) resolution of disputes. To that end, Corey provides same-day responses to calls and emails whenever possible. Corey provides frequent case-status updates to clients.
Outside of work, Corey enjoys sampling trails, roads and slopes throughout the Mountain West. Corey is an accomplished marathon runner and Boston Marathon finisher. Corey has also completed the Park City Point to Point, a hallmark Utah mountain bike event featuring 75 miles and 10,000 vertical feet of Park City’s finest singletrack.
